Winter-Spring Classes and Workshops – Learn with Christine Mitzuk
I teach art classes here in the Twin Cities at The Atelier Studio Program of Fine Arts in Minneapolis, MN. Anyone is welcome to register for classes in the part-time program, and workshops. NO portfolio review required! This Winter-Spring session I will be teaching three classes: Costumed Figure Drawing and Painting, a color theory class Color 2: Exploring Color, and Imaginative Art & Illustration, plus a workshop. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
If a class day is cancelled due to instructor business travel or national holidays, we will have make-up sessions.
Registration is handled through The Atelier Studio Program of Fine Arts.
Imaginative Art and Illustration
Hybrid Class (Students may attend in-person or via Zoom.)
Explore your imagination! In this class you will be coached through an imaginative art-making process that Christine uses for creating personal work and client commissions. Emphasis is placed on intent and visual narrative. Christine’s teaching is tailored to the needs of each student, be it exploring personal themes or creating work for your portfolio. Assignments can be provided or self-generated. You may work using traditional or digital media. The goal of this class is for you to learn this process (with modifications as needed) and build confidence in and further develop your unique personal creative abilities, therefore, we will avoid using image generators. During class, critiques and discussion are done in a supportive group atmosphere. Students will work on their projects between classes. We use Google Classroom to share information and review projects (Gmail account needed for access). Classes are not recorded. Email Christine with questions or concerns: christine.mitzuk@theatelier.org.
Fall session: Includes lectures on Christine’s imaginative art process, idea generation, composition, values, and color choices.
Winter/spring session: Does NOT include the lectures. Minimal introduction to the process on day one. After that, classes begin with a sketch prompt, and then we dive into project check-ins/critiques.
Summer session: TWO separate classes will be offered: one with the lectures, and one without.
Limit 8 students.
Fall & winter sessions: 14 weeks, $395
Summer session: 10 weeks, $285
Winter session class starts Thursday January 30, 2025, 7:00pm–9:30pm
Color II: Exploring Color
Deepen your understanding of color and put color theory to practical use. Learn ways to alter chroma, the relative nature of color, color harmony, simultaneous contrast, and more through a combination of presentations, demonstrations, and assignments. Assignments will include color mixing exercises and painting studies from still-life objects and master works. Color I or a basic understanding of hue, value and chroma are strongly recommended. We will be using the Paxton Palette in oil paint.
Class will be in-person at The Atelier.
Fall & winter sessions: 14 weeks, $395
Winter class starts Thursday January 30, 2025, 4:00pm–6:30pm
Costumed Figure Drawing and Painting
In this class we will explore how to portray clothed figures and different materials. Learn about underlying anatomy and how it affects folds, characteristics of fabrics and folds, and ways to use your artistic license to select folds and edit what you observe to serve your picture. These are useful things to consider when you need to invent or recreate the look of a costume for a picture.
This 14-week class will be broken into three segments, each with a different costume and pose. Using the sight-size method, students will develop a minimum of three costumed figure studies. Depending on experience, students are welcome to work in pencil, charcoal, or oil paint.
Winter session: 14 weeks, $425
Class starts Tuesday January 28, 2025, 4:15pm–6:45pm
Photo Reference Workshop
How DO they do that?! Are you uncertain, or do you have questions about how to create a picture of things that don’t exist? This could be a posthumous portrait, a picture of something historical, or something completely fictional. You know you need references but don’t know what to do.
In this workshop, we’ll share information, tips, and tricks about how to know what kind and how much reference you need, pictorial as well as legal considerations, what kind of reference is available to artists, and ways to shoot your own reference by either working with a photographer who has the ideal gear, or using what you have available if you have budget and/or time constraints. Come with questions!
On Friday there will be a presentation and demonstration at The Atelier. For attendees taking the full workshop, please come with rough sketches. Please be prepared to stay past 4PM so we may talk with you about your sketches so you have an idea of what you’ll need to prepare for the rest of the workshop. Please consider these things: any special clothing or costuming you may need; what is the setting, time of day, indoor or outdoor lighting; props that may be needed to fill in your sketch. If need be, you are welcome to bring a friend or hire your own model for the photo studio portion of the workshop, otherwise we will rely on fellow attendees or yourself to model for photo reference.
On Saturday and Sunday, the hands-on portion will be at David’s photography studio. During the hands-on portion, attendees will get to capture reference based on their sketches.
