Imaginative Art and Illustration
Learn Online for Fall 2020
Explore your imagination! Illustration is a story or idea told through a picture. It could be a picture of a dragon, an interpretation of an historical event, or an abstract concept made visible. The possibilities seem endless. During this class, students will develop pictures based upon a classic story or self generated ideas. We will work through idea generation, to preparatory work and on to a final picture. Emphasis will be placed on composition, and visual storytelling. Students may choose to work in the medium with which they are comfortable. You do not need to do digital art to take this class. For Fall 2020, this class will be taught online Wednesday evenings. The first 4 classes will include lectures on the imaginative art process, composition, and color.
During each class, critiques and discussion will be done in a supportive group atmosphere where we will share ideas. When applicable, Christine will do draw-overs in Photoshop of students’ work. You may choose to work in a traditional media and photograph you work for review each week. Students will turn in assignments through The Atelier’s Google Classroom each week. The instructor will access your submissions in order to review your project each class. A Google account is not required. This system is for class review of projects only.

Color 1 – Exploring Color: Color Theory and Color Mixing
Taught at The Atelier Studio Program of Fine Art in Minneapolis
Experience color hands-on through making color boards, a color wheel, and value scales. Using the colors of Te Atelier’s Paxton Palette, we will explore the attributes of color: hue, value, and chroma. Projects are paced by order of completion and working outside of class is recommended. This class is packed with information. Topics include the color wheel as it relates to painting with the Paxton Palette, mixing “mud”, Munsell and Gamblin color space, direct vs. indirect painting, color temperature, color harmony, and a bit of color history. Plus we’ll demystify the information on paint labels. Beginners to color welcome. Please contact Christine (cmitzuk@gmail.com) for what to bring to the first class. Familiarity with color attributes, or Color I or similar is strongly recommended before taking Color II.

Gestural Figure Study
Taught at The Atelier Studio Program of Fine Art in Minneapolis
Breathe life into your figure drawings by building a deeper understanding of gesture. This class will mesh The Atelier and Studio Arts figure study methods.
NEW FORMAT
Lessons will be taught through a combination of analyzing figurative art and photos, as well as through practical application of gesture while studying the live, nude model. We will alternate days in which students will be introduced to various gesture concepts through drawing on acetate over photocopies, between days where students will apply those concepts by drawing from the live model. Students may bring their own printouts of figurative art or figurative photos (sports, dance, martial arts), or share those supplied by the instructor.
