Fall 2023
I teach at The Atelier Studio Program of Fine Art in Minneapolis, MN. This Fall I will be teaching three classes as part of The Atelier’s Part-Time Program: Gestural Figure Study; Color 1, Exploring Color; and Imaginative Art & Illustration. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
Currently I’m planning to NOT hold classes the week of November 20, December 19, and 26. This follows The Atelier’s holiday break schedule for the Full-Time Program, because I also teach in the full-time program. This may change if we need to do any make up classes. Other instructors may do this differently. Check with your instructor.
Gestural Figure Study
Breathe life into your figure drawings by building a deeper understanding of gesture. This class blends The Atelier and Studio Arts figure study methods. Christine coaches students through a variety of exercises to explore different ways to see, understand, and capture gesture. By understanding gesture we can incorporate a sense of life into our drawings, tell a story through body language, or exaggerate it for effect. We will be studying gesture from the nude figure. Experimentation of materials will be discussed. Contact me with questions. I’m happy to answer.

Color 1: Exploring Color
In-person at The Atelier Are you confused by color? Do you work hard to mix a color only to get a color you didn’t want? My goal is to teach you how to make color mixing less frustrating and help you gain confidence in color mixing. Bring questions and a curious mind. Using the colors of The Atelier’s Paxton Palette, students will create color boards (based on the color boards shown in “Alla Prima” by Richard Schmid), as well as some free-form color exploration. Through these projects students will explore color and practice ways to think about what we see when mixing colors. Topics include mixing analogous colors, complements, the color wheel, color space, gamut, the attributes of color (hue, value, chroma), temperature, color bias, why a 50/50 mix does not make a middle color, mixing “mud”, and more. Each class is mostly work time, part presentation and discussion. Most students find they need additional time outside of class to complete the boards. We will work in oil paint. Please contact me if you wish to use other media, other colors, or have other questions.
Additional Thoughts: The color charts you create for this class are an opportunity to explore how and why colors mix the way they do without having to also make a picture. You will tape your boards off in a grid pattern and I will demonstrate how to wield a painting knife to apply the paint. The way the boards are done offers you practice in how to mix with some neutrals, what happens when mixing complementary or close-complement colors, analogous colors, etc.

Imaginative Art & Illustration
Hybrid in-person/online (students may attend class by Zoom OR in-person at The Atelier) Explore your imagination! In this class you will be coached through the imaginative art making process used by many artists for personal and professional commission work: idea generation, preparatory work (sketches and value design, reference, and color studies), and on to a final picture. Emphasis is placed on intent, and visual narrative. Christine’s teaching is tailored to the needs of each student… Read the full description here.
